Churches

Ancient churches are the jewels of the Sifnian landscape. The island is reputed to have 365 churches, many only accessible through coastal paths or scenic trails. Noteworthy churches include Chrisopigi, Panagia Poulati, and the Church of the Seven Martyrs. But our favorites are the whitewashed family chapels nestling in hidden valleys.

Kastro

The old fortified capital of the island developed in the 15th century during the Gozzadini era is one of the best‐preserved and most unique horas of the Cyclades. It is built on top of a high rock on the island’s east shore, with quite a dramatic formation. The simple white cubic forms of the buildings and the complex 3D spatial configuration of the streets were said to have had a profound impact on Le Corbusier during his Cyclades tour researching to further “New Architecture.” A short hike from the Kastro leads to the adorable miniature Church of Seven Martyrs residing on its own mini peninsula.

Hiking trails

The island also has a well‐maintained network of hiking trails. Even in high season, you can hike for hours through hidden verdant valleys or along the coastlines and seeing only nature and ancient sites. Spring hikes are particularly delightful, as the fields are all lush green and carpeted with wildflowers.

Archaeological sites & museums

As an island with history of human habitation since at least 4000 BC, Sifnos has a few noteworthy archaeological sites and museums, including the Mycenean citadel of Agios Andreas and the archaeological museum in Kastro.
